Innervate Gear: Auto-Swap Weapons with Outfitter

The other day, Phaelia at Resto4Life wrote an article about how to use weapon swaps to get the most out of Innervate. Although I’ve never played a Druid past level 20, I do have a Mage, and I’ve done my fair share of weapon swapping to maximize the effectiveness of Evocation.

The macros all looked familiar - things I’d used before I figured out that the Outfitter add-on could automatically swap weapons while I evocated. While reading the article, I thought - “Can Outfitter automatically swap weapons for an Innervate?” The Outfitter manual describes the basics of writing a script to automate outfit equipping. I figured that with this and the wowwiki description of API events, I could write up a simple script to automatically swap weapons when a person gains the “Innervate” buff.

So I logged into the game. Turns out I didn’t need to write a script. Within about 2 minutes, I had set up an accessory outfit with a pre-made script that automatically equipped when I gained a certain buff and un-equipped when that buff faded. Here it is, step by step.

Step Zero: Download Outfitter

I’m assuming you have Outfitter. It is an awesome add-on. Multi-purpose classes should definitely have this. It would take me forever to swap between tanking and healing (and sometimes DPS) gear if I didn’t have a key binding set up through Outfitter.

Step One: Create a New Outfit

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Outfitter, start by opening your Character Panel. You should see a little Robe icon in the top right corner. Click that to open up the Outfitter menu.

In the bottom right corner of the Outfitter menu, you should see a red button that says “New Outfit”. Click it.

In the dialog box that appears, enter a name (something like “Innervate” will do nicely). Then, click on the dropdown box for “Automation” and choose “Player has a buff” (like in the screenshot). We’ll specify the buff at a later point.

Finally, leave “Optimize For” set at “Create Empty Outfit,” and click Okay. You should now have a new outfit with no gear - none of your slots should have a checkmark next to them.

Step Two: Add Your Weapons

Screenshot of weapons added to an outfit in Outfitter. Now that we’ve created an outfit, we need to add our weapons.

In the Outfitter window, you should see your new Outfit (”Innervate” in the screenshot) selected - there is a check mark next to it. You should also notice that none of the gear slots have a checkmark - which means that there is currently nothing in this accessory outfit.

Find the weapon (or weapon and offhand) that you want to equip during Innervate. Equip them as normal. If things go according to plan, you should see a yellow checkmark next to your weapon slots. If not, click the empty box so that the slot is checked off. This signifies that the gear in that slot is part of the selected outfit.

Step Three: Designate a Buff to Look For

Screenshot of specifying a buff for Outfitter automation. When we created the outfit, we told Outfitter to automate this outfit based on whether or not we had a specific buff. Now, we need to tell Outfitter what buff to look for.

In the Outfitter window, there is a yellow arrow all the way to the right of your outfit’s name. Click that arrow to open up the options menu.

Under “Automation,” click on “Settings…” (the option highlighted in the screenshot). This should bring up a dialog box with one blank field for you to fill in.

Type in the name of the buff that you want Outfitter to scan for. In this case, we should enter “Innervate.” Click OK and go back to the main Outfitter menu.

Your auto-swapping Innervate outfit should be operational.

Step Four: Test It Out

Unfortunately, I don’t have a druid to test this with. I used a Paladin (as you can see from the screenshots) and used “Seal of Righteousness” as my buff. The mechanics should work the same, though, so I don’t foresee any problems.

To test this out, click the checkmark next to your Innervate outfit to un-equip it. You should now be wearing your regular gear.

Cast Innervate on yourself. Just after you cast Innervate, your weapons should be swapped out for the Innervate outfit. When the Innervate buff fades from you, your normal weapons should be re-equipped.

It’s really that simple!

Another benefit of this is that any class can create this macro. It wouldn’t be altogether strange for a druid to cast Innervate on another healer - like a priest (or maybe someone that died and had to be battle rezzed).

If that priest sets up an Innervate outfit, he or she will automatically equip some Int/Spirit gear to maximize mana regeneration. The outfit doesn’t scan for when you cast Innervate, it scans for when you gain and lose the actual buff. It doesn’t matter much who casts Innervate on whom.

So get to it. Outfitter ftw.

[...] Note: A more convenient option for Spirit-based weapon swaps is the use of the now out-of-date Evocation2 addon. It will swap to your highest Spirit-based weapon or mainhand/offhand combination while you’re under the effects of Innervate then swap back once the effect expires. Users of the Outfitter addon can use the walkthrough provided by Walkere of Rolling Horde to set up a custom outfit that activates automatically during Innervate. [...]
