Great Farming Spot for Herbalists, 100g+ per hour

Herbalism is a great tradeskill for making money. It can also be very useful personally, since you will need elixirs and/or flasks when you raid. If you know an Alchemist and you can’t pick herbs yourself, you’ll be paying through the roof for the herbs off the auction house.

There are a few good spots that you can generally pick herbs and make some money. Terokkar is a great place for Felweed and Terocone. A lot of nodes spawn all over the map, so it is rarely over-harvested. The Deadmire in Zangarmarsh is also pretty good, with a dense collection of Dreamfoil, Felweed, and Ragveil. Perhaps the best place to simply pick herbs, though, is Netherstorm. At least on my server, it is rarely overpicked. Netherbloom sells for quite a bit (30+g, although prices will vary by server). Loop around the zone for a half hour and you’ll have a stack or so to sell.

However, flying around picking herbs at random is not the best, nor the most efficient way, to make money with herbalism. For select classes, or two man groups, there is a much easier and more consistent way to do it.

The Talonsworn Forest-Ragers, which patrol around Skettis, drop amazing loot. The best part is, for certain classes, they can easily be solo’d. They appear to spawn along four patrol points, and after some flying around you’ll recognize the starting points. There is typically one along the western shore of the lake, one along the south, one along the east, and one to the southeast of the lake.

First, let’s look over their loot table. They typically drop nothing special - a gray item, and perhaps a green. However, once you herbalize it, the fun begins. Herbalizing it will yield three drops - motes of lifes and two slots of herbs. There will always be three slots to loot, but the amount you get can vary. The Motes of Life will vary from 2-5 per harvest, and the amount of herbs will vary from 2-4 (except Ancient Lichen, which may be 2-3).

The types of herbs that you can get are as follows: Felweed, Dreaming Glory, Terocone, Ancient Lichen, Mana Thistle, Black Lotus. The Black Lotus is a fairly rare drop (although I have had a tree drop TWO Black Lotuses, several times), but the others seem to be about evenly mixed.

Here’s an example of what you can expect to loot after harvesting.

3 x Motes of Life

3 x Felweed

4 x Dreaming Glory

The exact value of this loot will vary a lot from server to server and from time to time. I’ll let you valuate it yourself. However, if you get an average of 6 herbs per kill (plus some extra motes), you are getting almost a stack of herbs per three kills. That’s probably a lot faster than you can fly around and pick them.

As I mentioned, certain classes can solo these elites. The trees are susceptible to all forms of rooting, stunning, slowing, and fearing. So any class that is typically good at kiting will have a shot at this. The best classes I’ve seen do it are a Frost Mage, a Warlock, and a Shadow Priest. I’ve seen a combat Rogue do it, but there’s always the chance of an unlucky crit (~1800) which will splat you. Hunters have a chance at it, and I’ve seen a Feral Druid do it in Bear form (although it took a while). Experiment at it for a bit, and if you can’t do it alone… bring a friend! There’s plenty to share.

As an Ice Mage, I can typically kill the Forest-Rager, herbalize it, and move on to another one in about 2-3 minutes. At that pace, I can kill about 4 in ten minutes and a dozen in a half hour. That is a lot of herbs and a lot of motes of life. If you happen to outfarm the respawn rate, there are plenty of other things to kill in the area. If you need Skettis rep, you can kill some of the bird-guys. However, if you’re still looking for money, kill either the Warp Chasers (for their Warp Flesh) or the Water Elementals (for the Motes of Water).

Happy hunting!
